It’s been a strange year, and whilst there probably won’t be many Halloween parties taking place, you can still celebrate the holiday! Whether you’re just looking for something different to make or something to put a smile on the kids’ faces, we’ve got some great, meat-packed (what did you expect, we’re a butcher’s!) recipes that are sure to cause a fright.
Witch’s Finger Sausage Rolls
We’ll start off with an easy, yet delicious, recipe. Perfect for a snack or full meal, these pastry treats can be eaten at any time of the day!
Pack of ready rolled shortcrust pastry (or you can makeyour own if you fancy it!)
1 egg, beaten
Black olives
Grated parmesan
Tomato sauce to serve
Method:
Preheat your oven to gas mark 6, 200°C or fan 180°C.
Roll out your pastry and cut it into as many sections as you need to comfortably wrap the meat.
Wrap your bangers in the pastry and make them slightly tapered to look like a finger. Mark lines in each ‘finger’ for the joint wrinkles.
Brush each finger with egg wash.
Half each black olive and press the half onto the ‘fingertip’.
Lay the fingers on some non-stick paper on a baking tray.
Sprinkle with parmesan and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Pop them on a plate and apply ketchup to the base of each finger (or all over if you want to be really gruesome!).
Beef Mince Feet Loaf
A gruesome looking centrepiece that’s sure to disgust and delight people in equal measure! This meaty dish is easy to cook, looks impressive and is the perfect hearty food for the cold Autumn weather.
1 large white onion, minced (reserve 10 slivers for ‘toenails’!)
1 halved medium onion
4 large eggs, beaten
100g breadcrumbs
120ml milk
20g fresh parsley
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp mustard powder
1/2 tsp cayenne
Ketchup
Method
Preheat your oven to gas mark 4, 180°C or 160°C for a fan oven.
Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
Mix the meat, garlic powder, mustard powder, cayenne, minced onion, salt, pepper, eggs, breadcrumbs, milk, parsley and Worcestershire sauce together in a large bowl until evenly combined.
Halve the mixture into two shapes on the baking tray and then mould each into a shape.
Hollow out a shape around the ‘ankle’ and add the halved onion, sliced side up, to look like bone.
Cut five toes for each foot and add the onion ‘toenails’.
Brush ketchup on the ankle areas to look like blood, and add it anywhere else depending on how gory you’re feeling!
Place in the oven for 1 hour until well-cooked.
Serve warm and enjoy! Add extra ketchup when served if you want that fresh blood look for dinner.
Eyeball Tacos
Even if you’re a complete novice when it comes to cooking, you’ve probably made tacos before. Whether it comes from a kit or you make it from scratch, tacos are easy to cook and food that’s sure to please. As tacos are Mexican food, this would be a perfect dish to serve for aDía de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration in the days following Halloween. You can even buy a taco kit that will provide you with everything you need for cooking this dish, just make sure you add the sour cream and olive eyes after!
Cook the meat in a frying pan over a medium-high heat until mostly browned.
Whilst the meat is cooking, slice the black olives into halves, dice the tomatoes and chop your lettuce.
Add the taco seasoning and stir it in, making sure the mince is coated.
Turn the pan’s heat down to low and grab your taco shells.
Add some ground beef to each taco shell and layer it with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese.
Place two dollops of sour cream on top of the filling and add a black olive half to look like eyes!
